CLIA Parvovirus B19

Chemiluminescence kit for the detection of IgG or IgM antibodies against Parvovirus B19
in human serum or plasma

Parvovirus, also known as fifth disease, is a viral illness that primarily affects children. It is caused by the human parvovirus B19, which is transmitted through respiratory secretions or by contact with contaminated surfaces. Most cases of parvovirus are mild and self-limiting, but the virus can cause serious complications in certain populations, such as pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Pregnant women who become infected with parvovirus are at risk of passing the virus to their developing fetus, which can lead to fetal hydrops, anemia, and even fetal death. The risk of fetal complications is highest in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, but infection later in pregnancy can also cause complications. Individuals with weakened immune systems may also be at risk of serious complications from parvovirus, including chronic anemia and persistent joint pain.

Testing for antibodies against parvovirus (IgG and IgM) can provide valuable information about an individual's immune status and help diagnose recent or past infections. IgM antibodies are typically present in the blood within the first few days of infection and can indicate recent infection. IgG antibodies develop later and provide long-term immunity.
